Little Falls Park, Greenville, SC
Little Falls Park is a 3-acre public garden designed in collaboration with the City of Greenville, Carolina Foothills Garden Club and the family of Pedrick Lowery. The overall design coordinates multiple ideas and is comprised of The Sunflower Gardens, The Botanical Bridge, CFGC Botanical Garden and the Mill Ruin Stage.
The Sunflower Gardens were inspired by Pedrick Lowery’s enthusiasm for gardening. Pedrick, as a member of the Carolina Foothills Garden Club, was influential in creating the well-loved public space, Falls Park, in downtown Greenville, South Carolina, adjacent to Little Falls Park. The raised beds of weathered steel are shaped as sunflower petals and will showcase ornamental plants. At the center of one sunflower garden is a cool misting fountain, which highlights the complex pattern at the center of the sunflower. The other sunflower garden spaces will provide lawn and seating to picnic and relax or meet friends.
Carolina Foothills Garden Club wanted to preserve an area of Little Falls Park that was once the Furman Arboretum. The distinctive tall shade trees and cool, quiet atmosphere were to be honored as the design aimed to improve the pathways and provide access to the unique experience of the place. The CFGC Botanical Garden will become a refuge from the hot sun and a place to learn about the local horticulture.
The Botanical Bridge connects the Sunflower Gardens and the CFGC Botanical Garden and provides a link between the public parking lots and downtown retail stores. The overlook, affectionately called the Overleaf, will be a place to view the beauty of the botanical garden and provides an opportunity for events by local food businesses.
During the summer, the local theater company enjoys performing outdoors. The Mill Ruin Performance Stage is a redesign of the outdoor theater space that improves the amenities and the viewer’s experience.
