Mount Holyoke College, in South Hadley, Massachusetts engaged JMMDS to design a new hillside garden that links the college’s upper and lower campuses. In response, the studio developed a series of monumental stone steps with intermediate landings punctuated by stone perches and surrounded by beautiful plantings. Overlooking the century-old 1904 Garden and Conservatory, the Heckel Garden Steps feel like a flowing cascade. JMMDS also developed a new master plan for the 1904 Garden. The inspired idea is an opening flower, the petals of which will support the individual plant collections of the college.
