British Virgin Islands Landscape

This British Virgin Islands landscape delights with detail in the foreground while framing epic distant views.

Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio designed the outdoor spaces at this private residence, including roads, paths, walls, plantings, and landscape details. The steep grades of the peninsula were challenging, but they enabled the creation of beautiful focused views and alignments. In the palm drive court, a focal limestone fountain establishes the Moorish theme. Plants with dramatic foliage contrast with delicate palm fronds, all layered with trees, shrubs, and vines carefully selected for their color, form, and texture.

Visitors stroll through the landscape, down stone and boulder steps and along curving paths, immersed in tropical plants that open up to views of neighboring islands. Terraced gardens and elegant container plantings highlight the architecture of the main house and the individual casitas. A spacious infinity pool brings foreground and background into one.

Just beyond the formal landscape sits a lush orchard, abundant with grapefruit, oranges, mangos and more. A rugged wooden-stepped path with rope handrails follows a steep slope down to an intimate stone terrace for experiencing spectacular sunset views and the sounds of waves crashing below.
