On a recent trip to the west coast to visit her son, Julie was struck by how much his urban, concrete patio needed a transformation. To turn it into a low-maintenance outdoor retreat, Julie’s been searching for green products and materials. While she initially had his grad student budget in mind, Julie couldn’t help but fall for the design of a few more expensive products–now she’ll just have to search for their budget-conscious alternatives! One of Julie’s finds is Breezesta Recyled Poly Furniture, which is made by taking plastic milk jugs and water bottles that would otherwise end up in a landfill, and turning them into safe-to-use, no-maintenance outdoor furniture pieces. Breezesta furniture comes in several style families and 20 vibrant colors, all of which are UV fade-resistant. It also comes with a lifetime warranty. Julie’s thinking about adding a few brightly-colored chairs to add some punch to the patio.

Julie also came across these new tiles from DEX concrete and terazzo. The tiles are made of a modern lightweight concrete that contains 38% recycled material by volume, and are available in a number of standard and DEX colors to meet your design needs. Although their indoor uses are shown above, Julie thinks the concrete tiles would be great as the face of a short outdoor wall to give a stylish sense of privacy and enclosure.

And here’s a bit of a splurge for a small budget, but something Julie couldn’t resist–100% recycled planters from Loll in bright, cheerful colors. These planters are designed with the savvy recycler in mind–each size fits around either a 5 or 1-gallon bucket, or a 1-liter soda bottle. Just use the bucket or bottle to hold your soil and plants, and easily move the plants without having to move the entire planter. Perfect for apartment living and bringing summer plants indoors for the winter.
